When shopping for windows, one of the labels you want to examine is the NFRC (National Fenestration Registration Council) one, which assesses the energy performance of the window. And one of the ways they do this is by examining the solar heat gain coefficient.
What is the SHGC?
The SHGC is the value (measured and assigned between 0 and 1) by which a window is able to shield heat coming from the sun. With this in mind, a window that possesses a higher SHGC means it isn’t as effective in blocking the sun’s heat. The result of this performance would be higher energy costs and a less comfortable climate, particularly on sunny days and when the climate is the warmest.
Conversely, if you find a window that has a lower SGHC, it means the window does an excellent job of shielding the sun’s heat. And this will result in a more comfortable environment and lower energy bills since your home won’t encounter as much heat loss/gain.
A perfect illustration of this is to think of a sunny summer afternoon without a cloud in the sky. Over that time, the sun shines down on your house taxing your windows. By having models with a lower SHGC, they are able to keep the sun’s heat out of your home so you won’t experience warm drafts. Furthermore, because of the window’s ability to shield heat, your home’s air condition system won’t have to exert as much energy since the environment is stable.
What is the ENERGY STAR Standards for SHGC?
This depends on which climate zone you live in. The map shows what the SGHC requirements are for each region. As you can see, in areas prone to warmer climates for most of the year, the standard is lower than in areas that receive more variable temperatures.
